Our Autumn 2017 Issue call for submissions will close on October 23rd.


The Spittoon Literary Magazine publishes new and outstanding voices of Chinese literature with its English translation, as well as English-language literature engaging with China or Chinese identity. Spittoon is open to all styles and subject matter, with a preference for work reflecting or engaging with contemporary China. If your work is accepted, it will be published in both our print magazine and our digital magazine on Amazon.


Submission Guidelines

Poetry: 5-7 pages of previously unpublished poetry. Please send all pieces in one file to

Fiction: 1 previously unpublished short story of no more than 5000 words. Send to

Flash-Fiction: 1-3 pieces of previously unpublished flash fiction, of no more than 500 words each. Send to

Non-fiction: 1 piece of short-form criticism, review, or essay engaging with Chinese literature, of no more than 3000 words. Send to

Art: 1-5 pieces of visual art, including but not limited to photography, illustrations, painting, and graphic art. Please include a title and short caption of no more than 100 words. Art submissions should be attached as separate files (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .pdf), with subject heading “last name_first name” (Shakespeare_William). Send to

Other: We welcome hybrid work that does not fit into any of the above categories, such as Poetry Art, etc. Please send to







PLEASE NOTE: Please include your name, bio, and address in the text of the email. Besides Visual Art submissions, please attach your work as ONE separate document (not pasted into the text of the email); The document should be labelled         “last name_first name_genre” (Shakespeare_William).
